What we are looking for

We are looking for a graduate student to make an analysis with recommendations within the field of nuclear fuel failures.

In commercial BWRs debris fuel failures are always an operational issue. Prevention of debris fuel failures is a part of the operational strategy. The mechanism is in principle known, foreign material in the reactor primary loop get stuck in the nuclear fuel and is, by the thermal hydraulic forces during operation, eventually picks tiny holes to the fuel cladding causing a gas and water leak. Investigations aiming to finding solutions to the problem can be divided into the following areas:
1. Fuel technology and design
2. Core operation and fuel bundle load
3. Foreign Material Exclusion, FME4. Plant process design and reactor water cleaning systems
Detailed knowledge in each of those areas is still needed to reduce the fuel failure rates. The first three of those areas are rather well investigated but within the fourth comparably limited efforts have been made.

The purpose of this this Master Thesis is to develop the knowledge of this area further. The fuel failure rate seems to be higher for BWR having internal main recirculation pumps. Could this indicate that the design itself is more prone to cause failures? An investigation of the design influence on fuel failures could contain the following:
1. International survey on BWR fuel failure rates and the correlation to design.
2. The difference in the BWR design primary loop that could negatively contribute to a higher sensitivity.
3. Differences between BWRs regarding reactor water clean-up systems.
4. Suggestions on plant measurements and analyses that could support presented hypotheses.
5. Suggestions on plant modifications to improve the debris situation.
6. Reporting and presentation.
